Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) began to plan an oratorio on the subject of Elijah as early as 1837, a few months after the great success of his first oratorio St. Paul. The libretto of Elijah is most skilfully adapted from the Biblical account and ist music is both religious and dramatic. Throughout the work there are abundant examples of Mendelssohn's wonderful musical invention, in harmony and in scoring.
